Pleasanton Performs Sewer Testing

The Public Works Department is currently performing infiltration/inflow studies on the city’s sewer system in order to reduce extraneous water from entering the sewer system.  Elimination of rainwater and runoff from entering the system will help keep down utility costs and maintain compliance with Texas Commission on Environmental Quality requirements.

Current phase of the studies will involve smoke testing to assist in locating breaks and defects in the sewer system where extraneous water could enter the system.  Non-toxic, non-staining, odorless smoke will be introduced at selected manholes.  Smoke will then travel through the system including up through house laterals and be vented normally through roof vents.  Smoke will also vent through plumbing defects, broken pipes, open cleanouts, etc.  Smoke observed from the testing is not an indication of a fire.  If smoke does enter a building it will indicate plumbing problems where dangerous sewer gasses might enter the building.  In such cases simply open doors and windows to ventilate any smoke that enters the building.

Smoke testing to be conducted during the next few weeks will be performed in the northwest quadrant of the city.  City staff will be knocking on doors, handing out fliers, or posting notices at residences and businesses shortly prior to testing.  If you have any questions regarding the smoke testing please call Gabriel Guerra at  (830) 569-6123
